Biodiesel Duo host Eco-Fair this Sunday

By LAURA FIGUEROA

Lisa Bowman always knew she wanted to start her own company. She just didn't think it would happen as soon as it did.

A year after graduating from the University of Florida, Bowman and friend Christian Miranda started Sol Atlantic Biodiesel Fuel in May 2006.

Bowman, graduated from American High School in northwest Miami Dade in 2001, and went on to pursue a business degree at the University of Florida. While at UF, Bowman said she fully learned what it takes to open up a business.

''I always knew I wanted to start my own business,'' Bowman said. ``I just didn't know it would happen so soon.'' And she didn't necessarily know what. Enter Miranda, a Kendall resident who also attended UF.

While on a trip to Oregon, Miranda, who opted out of pursuing a degree in dentistry to focus on his passion for environmental conservation, noticed the widespread use of biodiesel fuels. That's when he approached Bowman about starting a biodiesel distribution company in the area.

Abandoned Citrus Plant Transforms into Biodiesel Producer

The price sensitivities work their way down to the pump, too.

Sol Atlantic Biodiesel at 9695 NW 79th Ave. in Hialeah Gardens is one of several South Florida stations that carry the product and one of the few that sells B99, or 99 percent pure biodiesel.

Open for five months, the company is supplying a few corporate fleets and has found a niche among eco-minded enthusiasts, said owner Lisa Bowman. The company is holding a rally Aug. 5 for the TDI Club, a group of VW and Mercedes owners that run their cars on biodiesel. But even fans have their limits, she said.

''Our ability to sell it depends directly on the fact that it costs less than regular diesel,'' Bowman said. Last week her product was selling at $2.91 a gallon while a nearby station was selling conventional diesel for $2.99. ''But when our prices go up, we struggle,'' she said.

The stuff in the tanks at Sol Atlantic Biodiesel looks, smells, and tastes like cooking oil. It is not too greasy and, if bottled right, the golden liquid could be mistaken for a pricey face serum.

While you probably could eat it or slather it on your skin with few ill effects (it's actually palm oil), the substance is really meant as an alternative fuel that can be pumped into any diesel engine.

Sol Biodiesel, one of only a few biodiesel distributors in Florida, opened in March. It's run by two 23-year-olds, Chris Miranda and Lisa Bowman, who met at the University of Florida. They deliver the fuel to customers (their first client is the Keys Electric Co-op, which uses the biodiesel in its trucks) and sell it out of their Hialeah warehouse (for a 50-gallon minimum). This past Tuesday, the stuff was selling for $2.93 a gallon — around what regular diesel costs at most gas stations.

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007 BioDiesel - FKEC Trucks Go "Green" to Reduce Emissions

FKEC Switches Trucks to Biodiesel to Reduce Emissions

Florida Keys Electric Cooperative recently converted its bucket trucks and other diesel-powered vehicles in Tavernier and Marathon to biodiesel, a clean burning alternative fuel. The conversion requires no modifications to the vehicles but substantially lowers emissions.

According to the National Biodiesel Board (biodiesel.org), the alternative fuel is produced from domestic, renewable resources and contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend. Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics.

FKEC's supplier, SolAtlantic is delivering the 99% biodiesel blend in 500-gallon increments.

Friday, March 23rd, 2007 Nice Gas

A little word association.

Diesel fuel? Truck drivers.
Truck drivers? Large Marge.
Large Marge? Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.

That “other” gas never ceases to drum up images of crazy-eyed hillbillies in big rigs with naked honeys on the mud flaps.

Even the most hardcore of petrols has a soft side, though, and after numerous trips to Oregon, Earth advocate and Miami native Chris Miranda quit dental school, called up college buddy Lisa Bowman, and the two opened Sol Atlantic Biodiesel.

Saturday, March 15th, 2007 Biodiesel Distributor Opens in Miami

I recently went to visit Lisa & Chris, business partners in their new venture, Sol Atlantic Biodiesel. Located in Hialeah Gardens, Sol Atlantic is ready to provide Miami with all of their biodiesel needs.

These two young entrepreneurs are working to make Miami a better, greener place. I'd like to personally say that I'm so glad they have taken on this venture and I really hope the community supports their business, and the cause.

A wholesale distributor, you could swing by their warehouse and pick up or pump up a minimum of 50 gallons of this veggie oil based fuel. Or, if you are purchasing over 100 gallons, they'll bring it to you!

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007 First Found Fuel

Earthrace is a boat, a crew, and a race to circumnavigate the globe while using only renewable fuels. This revolutionary wave-piercing trimaran has completed a promotional tour around New Zealand and across North America and now will attempt to set the UIM powerboat circumnavigation record starting March 6, 2007 from Barbados while using only Biodiesel.

While in Miami, Tuesday, February 20, Earthrace was refueled with 520 gallons of B-100 sponsored by Sol Atlantic Biodiesel; this fueling will allow Earthrace to travel to Puerto Rico for a promotional weekend February 23-26. In Puerto Rico Earthrace will receive the first fueling for the record attempt; Bio Diesel and Fuels de Puerto Rico, will be sponsoring 2000 gallons which will race Earthrace from Barbados to Panama. Earthrace is without a biodiesel sponsor, to become a sponsor please contact John@earthrace.net.

 The Race

Barbados-Panama Canal -Acapulco-San Diego-Maui-Majuro-Koror-Singapore-Cochin-Salalah-Suez Canal-Malta-Canary Islands-Barbados

Circumnavigating the globe is the world’s longest race at 24,000 nautical miles, and holds the greatest bragging rights for powerboat challenges. British boat Cable & Wireless, set the current record of 75 days in 1998; since then four boats have attempted the record but were unable to make the complete circumnavigation. Earthrace plans on finishing in less than 65 days, and will be the first to attempt to circle the globe using only renewable fuel.

Wednesday, February 27th, 2007 Earthrace Biodiesel Boat Video on Current.TV

Earthrace, the biodiesel boat trying to break the powerboat round-the-world record, was here recently during the Miami Boat show. I teamed up with local video production company Digital Visualistics to sit down and chat with the folks involved with the boat. They've now put together the piece, and it is available to view here and on Current.TV. Please give it the green light to get it on the air!

The boat was amazing, the people were even more incredible. I don't know if I've ever been so comfortable with people I'd just met. They have been spreading the good word on biodiesel for a couple of years now, and they have done an incredible job. They take off from Barbados on March 6 to attempt to break the world record. Earthrace exists through the support of the community. In fact, before leaving Miami, (new!) local biodiesel company Sol Atlantic donated 520 gallons of fuel to help get the boat down to Puerto Rico before they head off to Barbados.

Spend some time on the Earthrace site and read some of the blogs - enjoy learning about this wild ride. You may be so inspired to donate some money, time, or resources to the project. They really need the help, especially in these final days before the sixty-something day trip around the earth. And PLEASE...watch the video and let us know what you think, right there on Current!
